Sarajevo Zagađenje zrakaOn the occasion of the current issue related to an increase of air pollution in Canton Sarajevo, Minister of Planning and Environmental Protection of Sarajevo Canton Zlatko Petrović at today’s conference for media stated that in Canton Sarajevo in the upcoming days actions will be taken on the basis of the contingency plan of 2007. He stated that the traffic police will shut down the traffic all the vehicles without a catalyst and the cargo vehicles will be prohibited to pass in Canton Sarajevo.

The decision was made that all the vehicles of public utility companies, which do not have standard Euro 5, would stop operating ( primarily vehicles of the company “Rad” and “Vodovod”). The tram and trolleybus traffic since this morning has been enhanced, stated Petrović, and appeals to citizens to use public transport instead of private vehicles. Minister Petrović said that the heating company “Toplane Sarajevo” is ordered to reduce the heating in apartments by one degree.

Speaking of the air pollution problem in Sarajevo, Assistant Minister for Environment Protection in Sarajevo Canton Zijad Krvavac said that the air is being the most polluted by the heating system of the Presidency building, buildings of joint institutions, educational institutions and companies that use solid fuel.

The most endangered groups of the population -pregnant women, people suffering from heart issues, all those with respiratory problems, children and the elderly should stay home. If it it necessary to go outside, citizens are advised to breathe exclusively through the nose and to use protection, such as a scarf  or a tissue to cover the mouth and nose.

The warning situation and preventive measures will last until Wednesday, 25th December, when weather changes are expected and if the applied measures do not have positive results and the situation becomes alarming, more radical measures will be taken.
