igman marchThis year, there was a record number of participants on the Igman march, where they paid tribute and laid flowers at the memorial to members of the First Proletarian Brigade. This date is important because, on the 28th January 1942, the Brigade came to this place on Mountain Igman while they were going to the free territory to Foča.

Around 20 000 people participated in the Central celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Igman march. Most visitors were from Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Macedonia.

“We achieved a record in the number of people who participated. According to the information given by the commander who led the march and the people who took part, more than 5,000 people were on the march. Partisans, Italian partisans, athletes, scouts, hikers, all of them participated, out of which were 70 per cent of the young people, “said Ibrahim Durmo, the President of the Organizing Committee of the 75th anniversary of the Igman march.

The memory of the Igman march evoked the youngest participant from Slovenia, Albin Pibernik, who, as an 11-year-old with his parents attended the formation of the First Proletarian Brigade.

“My father was a commander of Slovenian troops in Uzice. We arrived in Rudo and formed the First Proletarian brigade, we were in the first squad, second or third line. There were 19 Slovenians who joined the partisans. It was terrible, it was not as nice as it is today and we felt cold because we were poorly trained. We were civilians with guns,” said Pibernik.

Marija, as Slovenian, who will be 91 years old soon, participates fourth time on Igman march.

“I come to Igman in order to honor the fallen soldiers who gave their lives for Yugoslavia,” said Marija.
