Due to the fans’ banners glorifying the deceased Hague convict Ratko Mladić, displayed at the Viktoria Plzen stadium in the Czech Republic, the European Football Association (UEFA) has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Belgrade’s Red Star Belgrade, Belgrade media write, citing an article by the American Athletic.
The disciplinary proceedings were initiated, according to the Athletic, due to “racist and/or discriminatory behavior”, “conveying a message inappropriate for a sporting event” and inappropriate behavior by the team.
UEFA rules for such an outburst provide for severe penalties, and for Red Star an aggravating circumstance could be the fact that the club posted a photo of a banner on its social media that read “General eternal glory and thanks”.
Ratko Mladić, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for war crimes and genocide in Srebrenica, died on Thursday in custody of the Hague tribunal at the age of 84.
