On January 8th, 2017, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) experienced one of its coldest days in recent years, with temperatures dropping as low as minus 30 degrees.
Due to the extremely low temperatures during those days, the Miljacka River at the Bentbasa dam was completely frozen.
A Twitter user shared photos showing the frozen Miljacka, while some dared to skate on the frozen river.
Such a sight in Sarajevo is rare, and many couldn’t resist “walking” on the river, even though the Stari Grad Municipality warned citizens to be extremely cautious and stay away from it.
In the end, they had to place warning tape around the Bentbasa dam to alert people that skating and walking on the frozen section of the river were strictly prohibited and that doing so risked the ice breaking and causing serious consequences.
Bentbasa, otherwise known as a summer destination for walkers, recreationists, and picnickers, was then bathed in winter sunlight and clad in an icy attire, taking on a completely different appearance from the usual.
At that time, Sarajevo recorded a temperature of minus 22.2 degrees, the lowest temperature measured in the city since 1947, Klix.ba writes.
