Roadtrip through BiH: the Home to Europe’s only Salt Lake

tuzla2Tuzla is located in the central northeast region of Bosnia. Rich in tourism, culture, and economics, it’s an important tourist spot for the northern half of the country.

Tuzla is rich in salt deposits; in fact, “Tuz” means salt in Turkish, the language from which the name was derived. This is just another way the Ottoman Empire has left its mark on Bosnia and Herzegovina.

While you’re here, you should definitely try Tuzlanski ćevapi: a dish that’s popular not only in B&H, but all over the Balkans. The ones in Sarajevo are arguably the most famous, but the ones in Tuzla are just as delicious!

In the city center, you’ll find an abundance of beauty and culture: a splatter of colors and a mixture of religions in yet another tolerant Bosnian city.

Both the Ottoman Empire and Austro-Hungarian Empire influenced Tuzla tremendously, and it remained an important city in former Yugoslavia. It’s no question that Tuzla is full of rich history and serves as another significant, multi-cultural city in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Tuzla is also home to Europe’s only salt lake. Although artificial, Panonska Jezera serves as a large tourist site, where many visitors come during the warmer days.
