The plane carrying European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was disrupted by GPS signals over Bulgaria in a suspected Russian operation today.
European Commission spokeswoman Arianna Podesta said the plane landed safely at Plovdiv airport and that von der Leyen would continue her planned tour of European Union countries bordering Russia and Belarus.
“We can confirm that there was GPS interference. We have received information from Bulgarian authorities that they suspect this was due to apparent Russian interference,” she said.
Von der Leyen, a critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Moscow’s war in Ukraine, is on a four-day tour of EU countries bordering Russia and Belarus.
Podesta warned that the incident underscores the urgency of the mission the European Commission president is carrying out in member states on the front lines, AP reports.
