Ambassador Johann Sattler, Head of the EU Delegation and EU Special Representative in BiH met today with a group of leading companies and associations to explore the potential of private-public partnerships to address air pollution, one of the most serious problems that Sarajevo Functional Urban Area (Sarajevo Canton and Cities of Sarajevo and East Sarajevo) has been facing.
The EU supports this process through the Net Zero 100 Cities initiative that requires substantial investments, at a level only possible through a combination of government and private funds. Almost 80% of all the change that needs to happen in the next decade to achieve Net Zero Emissions will be driven by the private sector bringing new clean energy products to the market and changes in lifestyle.
Sarajevo Functional Urban Area was selected from over 375 competing cities to join the European Union Mission: “100 Net Zero Emission Cities” to deliver 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030.
The meeting, which gathered Directors of DHL, UNIQUA, Porche/VW, UniCredit, Gazzda and Sarajevo Film Festival, was an excellent opportunity to hear from companies on their commitment and concrete actions taken to reduce air pollution in Sarajevo Functional Urban Area, using e-vehicles, Heat Pumps, solar panels, and on challenges, they have been facing. It opened up a dialogue how to better support and coordinate the Net Zero City Mission Goal.
The meeting was also attended by the representatives of Sarajevo Canton Prime Minister’s Office and the Office of Sarajevo’s Mayor as well as the Mayor of East Sarajevo.
