Scholz calls NATO the “most successful” International security Alliance

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday called NATO the “most successful” security alliance in history and on the global stage.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington, Scholz said the event, marking the alliance’s 75th anniversary, comes at a “very special” time.

Noting that Europe is faced with the Russian war against Ukraine, which threatens the peace and security order, Scholz emphasized that NATO has been a “successful peace and security” alliance for 75 years.

He promised that Germany would spend two percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) on defense and noted that after 2027, when the special fund of 100 billion euros allocated by the German government for defense is exhausted, about 80 billion euros will be allocated from budget for defense costs.

“Defense spending will almost double compared to ten years ago,” Scholz said.

He also assured fellow leaders that Germany would make efforts in the military alliance because “it is the largest country in Europe within the NATO alliance.”

“This gives us a very special responsibility. And I can say here very clearly and unequivocally: we will and I will fulfill this responsibility,” said Scholz, Anadolu Agency writes.
