Senators wrote to the State Department, criticizing Compliance with HDZ Demands in electoral Reform

A letter from the United States (U.S.) senators sent to the State Department on January 20th stated the objective circumstances of the security crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and finally concluded that the current compliance with only one option regarding the election law is not acceptable.

This was announced on social networks by a BiH journalist with a U.S. address, Erol Avdovic.

”We are concerned that our diplomatic efforts to support the necessary electoral and constitutional reforms in Bosnia are not bearing fruit. We ask the State Department to reconsider its approach to ensure that our strategy (inclusive) includes broader BiH political institutions, including parliament, ministries, and other state institutions, and robust enough to achieve our goals, “it was mentioned in the letter.

Avdovic writes that the letter was sent by Democratic Party Senator Jeanne Shaheen, and Ron Johnson from the Republican Party, and it went to one of the leading figures in the State Department, Karen Donfried, assistant secretary for Europe and Eurasia, head of U.S. diplomats Gabriel Escobar and MatthewPalmer who are frequently present in the Balkans.

“The letter implies two well-founded criticisms. The current U.S. approach to insisting on changes to the Election Law in order to satisfy the HDZ BiH is wrong and simply non-American and anti-European because it is not inclusive. After all, insufficient inclusiveness is presented as a direct objection, and this is explicitly stated in the letter. And secondly – the whole approach to electoral reforms in BiH goes through several diplomats led by Matthew Palmer and outgoing U.S.Ambassador to Sarajevo Eric Nelson, along with Gabriel Escobar, who seems to have distanced himself somewhat from a process for which he does not want responsibility (because it is Palmer’s paper) – is neither a robust nor an adequate approach. Nor, as stated in the letter – is fruitful enough, ” believes Avdovic.
