Senegal’s Stunning Pink Lake Mesmerizes Visitors with Its Vibrant Hue

The water of Lake Lac Rose in Senegal is pink again, after it had turned green nearly three years ago due to heavy rains and flooding at the time.

Located 35 kilometers from Dakar, also known as Retba or Wolof, the Pink Lake is among the saltiest lakes in the world.

The lake takes on pink hues due to the presence of the algae Dunaliella salina and holds significant tourist and economic importance for Senegal.

The lake, which for years was used as the final point of the Paris-Dakar rally, is one of the first natural beauties mentioned when it comes to Senegal.

The Pink Lake is also known for salt production, an important resource for Senegal‘s economy. Approximately 60.000 tons of salt are extracted from the lake annually. It is a place where 3.000 people earn their livelihood.

Salt production takes place from November to June, during the dry season.

Seasonal workers, usually from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, extract the salt by hand.
