The Defense of Ratko Mladic, visits of his family members to the detention unit in Scheveningen, as well as the funds allocated for him personally, cost about 4 million BAM (about 2 million EUR) the Hague Tribunal, BiH, and Serbia.

Experts of case Mladic call it “the most difficult”, as well as the most expensive in the history of this court, as reported by BIRN BiH.

Mladic’s attorneys – Branko Lukic, Miodrag Stojanovic, and Dragan Ivetic – as well as eight auxiliary persons, cost the Tribunal approximately 1,945,500 EUR (3.8 million BAM).

The Republic of Serbia also helped Ratko Mladic by paying 11,400 EUR (22,300 BAM) in the past four years personally to him, while his family’s visits, including air transportation and travel expenses, cost 41,800 EUR (or 81,500 BAM).

When it comes to Republika Srpska, the help to Mladic’s Defense was reduced to help him personally. The Government of the RS gave him allowance in the amount of 5.128 EUR (10,000 BAM) in 2013 and 2016.

On the basis of granting material assistance to the accused and convicted before the International Tribunal for the Prosecution of Persons Responsible for Serious Violations of International Humanitarian Law that were committed in the Territory of the Former Yugoslavia, Serbia gave 41,800 EUR (81,510 BAM) to Mladic’s family.

The attorney team had the right to 10 plane tickets per year during the trial, which cost around 250 EUR per lawyer. The Tribunal allocated 37,500 EUR (73,125 BAM) for plane tickets.

According to estimates by Mladic’s lawyer Stojanovic, the budget for the rest of the staff is about three times larger than the approved budget for the Defense, which amounts to about 6 million EUR (11.7 million BAM).

Stojanovic explained that the case “Mladic” was placed in “A” category, and it is considered as the most difficult cases in the work of the Hague Tribunal. Guidelines for payment of attorneys and other staff are determined by the category.
