In the early morning, on orders of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH and War Crimes Prosecutor’s Office of Serbia, police operation was carried out simultaneously in area of both states, where several suspects were arrested, ten in BiH and four in Serbia, was announced by the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH.
The arrestees are suspected of committing war crime in Štrpci and Višegrad, when at least 20 persons were taken from a train on route Belgrade – Bar and then killed in area of BiH, who were Bosniak citizens of Serbia and Montenegro and one of African-Asian background.
Suspects will be handed over to the acting prosecutors during the day, who will then decide on filing a motion for custody.
Prosecutor’s Office of BiH and War Crimes Prosecutor’s Office of Serbia formed a joint investigative unit in this case, which collected evidence on perpetrators of this atrocious crime for about a year in area of BiH and Serbia, in cooperation with the police agencies of the two states.
Among the suspects are highly ranked military officers of the RS Army from that period, and direct perpetrators who participated in tortures and executions of victims who were then thrown in Drina River.
This investigation is an example of good and efficient cooperation between prosecutions of the two countries, based on Protocol on Cooperation because it is a war crime committed in area of the two states.
Prosecutor Offices of BiH and Serbia will continue their cooperation in revealing and processing war crimes cases, and they will inform ICTY, MICT and the UN Security Council about the results.
