Greek authorities on the islands of Rhodes and Lemnos declared a state of emergency on Sunday after storms hit the islands, killing at least three people.

Rescue teams, backed by the army, evacuated elderly residents in the affected areas after strong winds and heavy rain over the weekend overturned cars, caused power outages and damaged roads.

At least three people have died in the weather in Greece, and roads and buildings have been damaged on the islands of Rhodes and Lemnos, as well as in other parts of the country.

A driver died from hypothermia after he veered off the road and into a ditch in the Chalkidiki region on Sunday.

The storm, dubbed Bora, hit Greece on Saturday and is expected to bring heavy snowfall to the north of the country by Tuesday.

The Greek Hydrometeorological Service said more than 17 centimetres of rain fell in 12 hours on Sunday.

Thousands of homes were flooded and several areas were left without power.

“Storm Bora proves that what we knew about natural phenomena is no longer valid,” Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said today.

“We ask all citizens to follow the instructions of the authorities until the situation calms down,” he added.

Two people died on the island of Lemnos, and many fields were flooded.

On the island of Rhodes, the storm damaged roads, homes and business buildings over the weekend, regional governor George Hadiamarcos said, adding that many people had been evacuated.
