The signing of the Memorandum on the cooperation of the City of Sarajevo, the city municipalities and the Canton of Sarajevo on the implementation of the “Clean Miljacka River” project took place today in the Sarajevo City Hall. The memorandum was signed by the Mayor of Sarajevo Samir Avdić, the Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton Nihad Uk, the mayors of the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo and Stari Grad Benjamina Karić and Irfan Čengić, and the assistant mayor of the Municipality of Novi Grad Kenan Bukva.

The memorandum established a framework for institutional support and coordination in the planning and implementation of the project, with the aim of improving the water quality of the Miljacka River and improving the overall ecological situation in the greater Sarajevo metropolitan area.

In 2026, the realization of 47 projects that make up the unique “Clean Miljacka River” project is planned, the largest number of which relate to projects of adequate drainage of fecal waste water, disposal of municipal waste, arrangement and cleaning of watercourses, including investment maintenance of watercourse beds in the area of the city of Sarajevo.

Mayor Avdić pointed out that this is a strategically extremely important project, the realization of which the citizens of Sarajevo have been waiting for a long time.

“Only through a comprehensive and coordinated approach is it possible to return Miljacka to its full ecological and urban potential, and make it a clean, well-organized and recognizable part of the city environment again,” Avdić said.

The signatories of the Memorandum undertook to ensure the realization of projects in their budgets and operational plans, and to provide full institutional and operational support for its implementation through competent ministries, services and institutions.

Projects for which it is necessary to secure additional financial resources will be submitted to the Public Investment Program of the Canton of Sarajevo or the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the aim of securing funds from the cantonal and federal budgets, international funds and other sources. Special emphasis is placed on the mutual cooperation of the signatories in the preparation and candidacy of projects, in accordance with valid regulations and legal competences.

An integral part of the Memorandum is the Action Plan for the year 2026, which contains an overview of projects and those responsible for their implementation – announced the Public Relations Department of the City of Sarajevo.
