Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said today, ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, that it is important to help the Western Balkan countries on their path to the EU and pointed out that the Union wants a “strong and stable Serbia”.
She expressed concern about the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially because of the secessionist rhetoric that is harming the country on its path to the EU.
“What is happening in our region is important. We are particularly concerned about the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially because of the secessionist rhetoric, which of course is harming the country on its path to the European Union,” Fajon told reporters before the start of the meeting of foreign ministers.
She said that yesterday, at an informal meeting with the foreign ministers of the Western Balkan countries, the geostrategic necessity of helping the countries on their path to the EU by 2030 was agreed.
She reminded that Albania will open a new chapter tonight and said that Montenegro is making good progress on its European path.
“I hope that another country on this path will accelerate reforms,” said Fajon, adding that the EU “wants a strong and stable Serbia.”
Fajon recalled the initiative of Slovenia and Germany to accelerate the enlargement process by introducing qualified majority voting, which, according to her, would speed up negotiations and remove some obstacles in the countries’ bilateral relations.
Fajon is attending a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg today on the Western Balkans, where the situation is deteriorating, especially in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. The situation in Ukraine and developments in the Middle East are also on the agenda.
