The Head of the European Union Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Luigi Soreca, visited the Radio and Television of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BHRT), where he met with trade union representatives and the Acting Director General of BHRT, Belmin Karamehmedović. Soreca said he visited BHRT to express solidarity with all those affected by the current situation.
As he posted on X, the Head of the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina witnessed firsthand the working conditions at BHRT and expressed his respect for the employees who continue to perform their duties professionally despite extremely difficult circumstances.
BHRT is a key institution for the democratic development of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its EU integration process. A stable and independent public broadcaster remains a priority on this path.
“The responsibility for BHRT’s survival lies with the domestic authorities. It is high time for concrete decisions. If the competent authorities fail to act immediately, responsibility for any potential collapse of BHRT will be exclusively political. The EU remains ready to provide technical and political support, however, we cannot compensate for the lack of political accountability of domestic institutions. At a time when the media are under significant pressure from disinformation, commercial interests, and political influence, an independent and objective public broadcaster is more important than ever,” Soreca wrote.
It should be recalled that a systemic solution for financing the state public broadcaster has not yet been established, and BHRT is facing a serious threat of account blockage and possible court proceedings that could result in asset seizure.
