peter_sorensenSpecial Representative of the EU to BiH Peter Sorensen, accompanied by the Director of JP Autoceste FBIH Ensad Karić visited today the site of the tunnel 1. March (Tunnel Vijenac) and the subsection Drivuša – Gorica.

The Director of JP Autoceste Ensad Karić expressed his satisfaction with Sorensen’s visit, which he said represents support to the company that is working to build the highway.

“The subsection Drivuša – Gorica should be completed in 12 months, in which the highway would connect two major cities in BiH-Sarajevo and Zenica. JP Autoceste FBiH will continue its jobs in a transparent way so that by the end of 2014 there will be 100 kilometers of highway’’, said Karić.

Sorensen said that the EU, as well as BiH, is very interested in seeing the completion of Corridor 5-C and that the commitment of BiH to this project is exceptional because it creates new jobs in the country.

“For BiH, it is key to be ready in order to cope with the pressure that EU membership brings, and to achieve this it must have developed infrastructure. The completion of this project will mean that the time needed for transport through BiH would be halved’’, said Sorensen.

He underlined that he is looking forward to the completion of the works of this section and the travel from Sarajevo to Zenica, but that he is especially looking forward to the completion of Corridor 50C and congratulated the hosts for the work that has been done so far.

“From 2008-2012, we allocated more than 60 million euros from IPA funds for these projects and we believe that political agreements are necessary to launch similar projects and to create new jobs. In addition to roads, there are railways, airports and river routes whose development also encourages employment and the EU is always ready to support that because you are a part of Europe and you are expected to be connected to our road network’’, said Ambassador Sorensen during a tour of the construction site.

The tunnel 1st March represents significant infrastructure projects in BiH, in which local companies are engaged.
