Southern Interconnection – the main Topic of Interest for Embassies of Major Countries

The Southern Gas Interconnection, in addition to being the subject of negotiations between political leaders in BiH, has now become the main topic of the US Embassy and the Russian Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They are fighting for their interests through this issue, according to analysts. The energy efficiency of our country is important to the US. Russia’s position is that the US insists on transporting American liquefied gas. Yesterday’s meeting is “to blame” for everything.

Meeting of members of the federal parliament with representatives of the US administration. Topic: adoption of the Law on the Southern Gas Interconnection. As stated, the members heard from American friends how important it is to adopt the Law on the Southern Gas Interconnection.

“We talked about the importance of the Southern Interconnection for the energy independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina and about the need for BiH to move quickly along this path and to overcome individual political interests. All this with the aim, I repeat, for Bosnia and Herzegovina to achieve energy efficiency,” said US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Alexander Kasanoff.

This meeting angered the Russians. A harsh reaction came from the Russian Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which many in BiH also characterized as a threat.

“The event was painfully reminiscent of the scene when Joe Biden, then still in his capacity as Vice President, sat at the head of the table in Kiev and taught the Ukrainian leadership how to live. It is obvious what this led Ukraine to. Remember this day when all the masks of “democratic” decency were removed, when the sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina was demonstratively trampled underfoot with the rough boot of a “proven friend”, “said the Russian Ambassador to BiH Igor Kalabuhov.

Two major world powers in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina are fighting for their interests. Each in its own way – this is the position of analysts.

“The Russian Embassy calls it neocolonialism and is supposedly concerned about the sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but in fact it wants to subjugate Bosnia and Herzegovina in terms of energy, as well as a whole number of other countries”, believes political analyst Enver Kazaz.

“In addition to, of course, political interests, in addition to the interests they have, conditionally speaking, a strategic position, of course there is also an economic one. Russia is certainly trying to preserve its economic interest in all of this, and the Americans are trying to gain even stronger influence, influence in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region in this way,” says political analyst Mladen Bubonjić.

The deputies received clear instructions, as they themselves said. Representatives of the HDZ BiH were not invited. Their position is that a new company, the Southern Gas Interconnection, should be formed with headquarters in Mostar.

“I would not make any insinuations here. The positions of the HDZ are probably already known to the US Embassy in advance, so they may be talking to those parties from whom they want to find out their positions on this issue,” says HDZ BiH Vice President Darijana Filipović.

The session of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is scheduled for Friday. It is expected that this law could be on the agenda. This is a law that was before the deputies back in 2021, BHRT writes.
