An earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale has struck the Tongan islands, the German Geosciences Research Center (GEOFON) said on Sunday.
The earthquake struck at around 3:03 p.m. at a depth of 193 kilometers off the coast of Tonga, GEOFON said.
There were no reports of casualties or damage.
The earthquake’s magnitude was initially recorded at 6.1, but was later updated to 6.
Tonga, officially the Kingdom of Tonga, is an independent archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean. Tonga consists of 176 islands, 36 of which are inhabited.
The islands are spread over an area of over 700,000 square kilometers in the ocean, in the South Pacific.
According to official data, strong earthquakes often occur near the Tongan islands.
