The University Clinical Center in Tuzla made progress in its work together with the recognized expert in plastic and aesthetic surgery Peter Zorman. The local operating team performed a complex breast reconstruction surgery on a patient who underwent a mastectomy due to cancer.

During his stay at the University Clinical Center Tuzla, Dr. Zorman, together with the operating team of the Clinic for Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, performed breast reconstruction surgery after mastectomy.

Zorman explained that the goal of reconstruction is not only to replace the tissue but also to restore the appearance and symmetry of the breast.

“It is an excellent alternative to reconstruction with implants and the only method of reconstruction for patients who want a warm, soft, and natural feeling of a reconstructed breast. Experience shows that, except in selected cases, natural and permanent results of breast reconstruction can only be achieved by transferring tissue from another part of the body. Usually after a mastectomy, the only remaining tissue on the breast is the muscle and part of the skin, and our task is to restore the shape of the breast and achieve the most natural and beautiful shape,” said Zorman.

Specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Clinic for Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery of the University Clinical Center Tuzla, Eldar Brkic, explained that the stomach is the most frequently used donor location for autologous breast reconstruction.

“The abdominal tissue used in the flap has a greater chance of matching the appearance of the other breast, and the removal of tissue from the lower abdomen can give the effect of an abdominoplasty that will improve the shape of the body,” Brkic explained.

One of the main advantages of autologous reconstruction is the ability to reshape the breast using different techniques to achieve symmetry and the best possible result.

The postoperative course of the patient lasts four to six weeks, and the patient can expect to leave the hospital after the fifth day of the breast reconstruction surgery, Klix.ba reports.
