At least 32 people have been killed and several wounded in an attack by suicide bombers and gunmen on a popular location in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, a police spokesman said.

Former Prime Minister Hasan Ali Kaire said the explosion occurred while locals were swimming and relaxing at Lido Beach.

“The fact that the terrorists attacked at a time when the beach was full of people shows their cruelty and hostile intentions towards the people of Somalia,” a police spokesman said.

It is believed that the militant group “Al Shabaab” is behind the attack that took place on Friday evening.

The SONNA news agency reported that in the conflict with the security forces, five attackers were killed, while the sixth committed suicide by detonating a bomb.

Officially, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, RSE reports.
