Tajani comments on the possible Recognition of the State of Palestine

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Thursday at the ANSA Forum that he is in favor of Italy recognizing a Palestinian state, but only when its borders are defined.

Spain, Ireland and Norway recently officially recognized Palestine as a state in an attempt to step up efforts to find a political solution to the war in Gaza.

“I am in favor of recognizing the Palestinian state, but it is necessary to define its borders first,” said Tajani.

“I am in favor of a solution of two peoples, two states, but there must not be a decision based on the pre-election campaign,” he added, talking about this week’s European elections.

“It is necessary to work on the future of peace with prudent decisions, without trying to get a vote or two more,” he said.

He added that the first shipments of food containers for Gaza, an initiative led by Italy to help feed Palestinian civilians with the UN agencies FAO and WFP, are about to begin.
