On Monday, the Hungarian parliament elected Tamas Sulyok as the country’s new president.
The former president of the Constitutional Court, Sulyok, was sworn in after the majority of deputies voted to succeed Katalin Novak, who recently resigned.
Novak resigned because of the controversial decision to pardon a person who covered up sexual abuse of children in April last year. The then president pardoned about twenty people ahead of Pope Francis’ visit to Hungary in April last year. In May 2022, Novak was elected as the first woman president of Hungary.
Parliament elected Sulyok for five years. He is expected to take office on March 5. Sulyok has been the president of the Constitutional Court since 2016, AA writes.
