Tenth Protest in Belgrade due to Allegations of Election Theft

Several hundred citizens gathered tonight in front of the building of the Republic Election Commission (REC) in Belgrade to protest the alleged election theft.

Traffic was stopped in Ulica Kralja Milana, from the intersection with Ulica Kneza Miloša, to the Abbot’s Palace in Terazije.

Official of the Democratic Party (DS) Srđan Milivojević told the Beta agency reporter that representatives of the “Serbia Against Violence” list will address the crowd.

“After the address, we will decide, depending on the number of people, whether to go for a short walk,” said Milivojević.

A large number of media teams are present at the protest, and the gathered citizens carry banners with the inscriptions “We are not your children” and “Marinika, please eat”.

After the incidents at the protest on December 24 in front of the city hall, about forty people were detained.

The coalition “Serbia against violence” claims that their supporters are not to blame for the incidents and that it is a “political arrest”. The youngest arrested is 18 years old, according to opposition representatives.

Strong police forces prevented the attempt of some of the opposition leaders of the coalition and demonstrators to enter the City Assembly, while masked people threw stones at the building, breaking the glass on the front door and side windows.

The police who were inside the building fired tear gas at the gathering. According to the statement of the Serbian MUP, eight police officers were injured.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić accused opposition leaders of being promoters and organizers of violence, while Prime Minister Ana Brnabić compared that protest to Ukraine’s Maidan and an attempt to seize power by force.
