At least 18 people were killed and 30 injured in a bomb attack in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state on Saturday, the head of the State Emergency Management Agency, Barkindo Saidu, said.
Borno is at the center of a 15-year insurgency that has killed thousands and displaced millions. Although the Nigerian military has reduced the militants’ capabilities, they continue to carry out attacks on civilians and security targets.
Saidu said suspected suicide bombers attacked a wedding, a funeral and a hospital separately, killing and injuring dozens of people in Gwoza town.
No one takes responsibility
Saidu said 18 deaths were confirmed, including children, adults and pregnant women. “The degree of injuries ranges from ruptured abdomen, fractured skull and limbs,” he said.
No one claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Borno State Police were not immediately available for comment.
Boko Haram and a separate group, the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP), are the most active militant groups in Borno.
