People mourn at a makeshift memorial for the victims outside the Charles University in central Prague, on December 22, 2023, as police investigators kept working on the campus the day after a deadly mass shooting. The gunman who opened fire at Prague's Charles University killed 13 people and then himself, Czech authorities said, revising the toll from 14 victims. Czech authorities sought a motive in the a student's gun attack at the Charles University's Faculty of Arts. The gunman, a 24-year-old student, died during the attack on December 21, 2023. In the shooting that happened yesterday afternoon at the university in the center of Prague, 15 people were killed, including the attacker, and more than 30 were injured. N1 talked about this tragic event with journalist Milovan Jovanović, who lives and works in the Czech Republic.

He said that there was no one who was not shaken by what happened in Prague. The Czech Republic is in tears, in fear, in shock.

“There is great uncertainty and great fear of what could happen next. This is the biggest crime in the history of the Czech Republic. This kind of massacre is something that has not been recorded before in the Czech Republic,” he said at the beginning of the conversation.

The 24-year-old murderer from Prague, David Kozak, allegedly stated on the Telegram social network that he was going to commit a massacre at the university and that he might kill himself. He wrote in Russian, and he pointed out that he was inspired by Alina Afanaskina, the 14-year-old who opened fire at a school in Bryansk, Russia, in early December, killing two people and injuring five others. Afanaskinova killed herself. This is what the media in the Czech Republic wrote.

“All kinds of things are coming out in the media now and we have to wait to see what the final version and the real truth is. Whether he had role models or was guided by some examples that he should have copied, we will see. It is very difficult to prevent such creatures. When we draw a parallel with the massacre at the school in Ribnikar, I think that it is unrecorded that a child killed his peers. This killer was 24 years old and killed students. This is not typical even in the USA, where there are such murders in schools and colleges. The Czech Republic was run as a safe, cosmopolitan country. This kind of crime is something terrifying and another thing that needs to be talked about. The war in Ukraine has been going on for almost two years, we have a war in Gaza, crimes, general hypocrisy. No empathy, no emotion. See what is happening around the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. It is the shame of the whole world. We had individual terrorist attacks in France and Belgium. All these wars reflect on the situations”, says Jovanović.

Six days ago, an unknown assailant shot and killed an adult and a child near Prague, and according to the media, the victims were a thirty-two-year-old man and his two-month-old daughter. The media from the Czech Republic claim that the killer is an attacker from Prague.

“I’m not going to say the name of that monster on purpose. The murder of a girl and her father took place. But even before he started his campaign yesterday, he killed his father and tried to blow up the house. Then he went to Charles University and committed a massacre,” said Jovanović.
