More than 40 prisoners in the Zenica Penitentiary, the largest closed prison in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), will have the opportunity to finish primary school within the prison walls, all thanks to director Redzo Kahric and minister Spahija Kozlic.
The director of the Zenica prison, Redzo Kahric, proposed the idea of educating the prisoners to the competent Ministry of Education of the Zenica-Doboj Canton (ZDC) and Minister Spahija Kozlic after it was determined that 43 of them had not completed primary school education.
In an interview, the Minister of Education of the ZDC, Spahija Kozlic, said that the idea came from director Redzo Kahric and that it was immediately accepted.
”I arranged a working meeting with representatives of the Zenica Penitentiary and my colleagues, and we agreed on the next steps. Zenica Penitentiary will collect all the relevant documentation for enrolling students, and the Ministry will designate a primary school from the list of schools responsible for adult education, and the entire work will be carried out in accordance with the Adult Education Act,” Kozlic stated.
He added that the school, together with the officials of the Ministry, will determine the conditions for conducting classes on the premises of the Zenica Penitentiary, after which teachers will be engaged in conducting classes.
”Namely, one school year, according to the Adult Education Act, lasts three months. After the completion of the entire process, the competent school will register the graduates in the registry book and issue adequate certificates. It should be said that these are extremely important activities aimed at reducing the number of illiterates, as well as the process of resocialization of convicts,” Kozlic added.
Redzo Kahric, as the director of the Zenica prison, has previously shown great sensitivity towards the prisoners and the institution he heads, and this activity is another indicator of his dedication to his position, Klix.ba reports.
