A Ukrainian lawmaker and former speaker of parliament was shot dead in the western city of Lviv on Saturday, authorities said, in what President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned as a “horrible murder.”

Zelensky has promised a thorough investigation into the killing of Andriy Parubiy, a prominent politician who served as speaker of parliament in the 2010s.

Police said the 54-year-old Parubiy “died on the spot from his wounds.”

They added that they were searching for the attacker, saying the motive for the killing was unclear.

Parubiy, who served as speaker of parliament from 2016 to 2019, was a prominent supporter of the pro-European Orange Revolution of 2004 and the Maidan Revolution of 2014, AFP reported.
