The Mountaineering and Sports Organization Vihra Rudo, with the key support of the Municipality of Rudo and the support of sponsors, is organizing the 4th Salamander Trail.

The race through the hills and mountains of Rudo, on tracks of 21.5 km and 12 km, will be held on October 24, 2026, and will bring together both male and female runners from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region.

The organizers invite interested runners to mark the date of the 4th Salamander Trail in their running calendars, with registrations opening at the beginning of June.

“In the three years of organizing the Salamander Trail, we have attracted over 200 runners to Rudo, which is a great pleasure and provides valuable experience for moving forward. This year, we again have two courses: the long course is 21.5 km with an elevation gain of 1,050+ meters, and the short course is 12 km with an elevation gain of 600+ meters,” said Mirko Ivanović, coordinator of the Salamander Trail project and a member of the Mountain and Sports Organization Vihra Rudo.

“This year, the organizers will also provide monetary prizes for the top three in both the male and female categories on each course, along with suitable gifts. All participants will be offered lunch, refreshments, and a music and entertainment program,” Ivanović said.

Many runners, regardless of age or fitness level, return to Rudo year after year because of the wonderful memories and the great atmosphere.

“What motivates me the most is the desire to get as many young people as possible involved in physical activities and to showcase the magnificent nature of Rudo to our guests,” said the twenty-one-year-old citizen of Rudo, who has been a professional trail runner for over five years.

“Citizens of Rudo are positively surprised and respond very warmly to the Salamander Trail, as they have not previously experienced organized trail races in Rudo. They gladly come out to the streets to support the runners and welcome them at the finish line,” said Ivanović, emphasizing that all information about the race can be found on the Salamander Trail Facebook and Instagram profiles.

According to the 2013 census, the Rudo municipality has 7,963 inhabitants, with 1,760 living in the town itself.

“Keep in mind that the population is now significantly lower, with youth making up around 20-25%. Life for young people in Rudo is fairly simple. Sports, especially football and volleyball, are widely practiced among them. Running, hiking, cycling, and fishing are also popular, though to a lesser extent,” said Ivanović.

Rudo is located by the Lim River in the eastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the border area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro. This municipality is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Its tourist offer is further enriched by the Salamander Trail, a race named after the spotted salamander (Salamandra salamandra), which is widespread in Rudo and its surroundings.
