The ‘King of Cryptocurrencies’ could still be extradited to South Korea by Montenegro

Montenegro will extradite the South Korean citizen Do Kwon, known as the “King of Cryptocurrencies” to South Korea, the High Court in Podgorica decided, according to the non-final verdict, Podgorica media reported.

The spokeswoman of the High Court in Podgorica, Marija Rakovic, told the MINA agency that “the extradition of Do Kwon to South Korea was allowed in a shortened procedure, and the request of the United States (U.S.) was rejected as unfounded.“

The decision is not final, because there is a right to appeal, Rakovic added.

Last week, the Appellate Court in Podgorica accepted the lawyer’s appeal and canceled the previous decision of the High Court on the extradition of Do Kwon to the U.S.

The U.S. is charging Kwon with multiple crimes

According to an earlier announcement by the High Court, Do Kwon is wanted by South Korea for the crime of unfair trading, fraud and violation of public offering.

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York charges Do Kwon with multiple felonies including conspiracy to commit securities fraud, wire fraud, and securities price manipulation.

Do Kwon and an associate were arrested in March last year at the Podgorica airport in an attempt to leave Montenegro with forged documents, Al Jazeera Balkans reports.
