At today’s session, the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina gave an agreement to Ronald Johnson, who was nominated by US President Donald Trump to be the new ambassador of the United States of America to Bosnia and Herzegovina, it was confirmed to Fena from the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

By granting the agreement, Bosnia and Herzegovina agreed to his appointment as head of the American diplomatic mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while his formal appointment depends on the completion of the procedure in the United States of America.

On June 1 of this year, the White House forwarded Johnson’s nomination to the US Senate for US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

According to currently available information from the US Senate, his nomination, under the designation PN1022-16, is before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

At the end of July, the committee confirmed that he meets the requirements regarding the competences prescribed by the US Foreign Service Act for the performance of the duties of the US ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, this does not constitute a final confirmation of his nomination.

In the continuation of the procedure, the nomination is considered by the Foreign Relations Committee, after which the confirmation of the Senate is required for the appointment.

After the Senate confirms the nomination, a formal appointment follows in the United States of America.

Johnson can then come to Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the diplomatic-protocol accreditation procedure follows. Upon arrival, a copy of his letter of credit is submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, after which the original letter of credit is handed over to the Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

With the presentation of the letter of credit, he formally assumes the duties of the ambassador of the United States of America in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The agreement issued today by the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina represents the consent of the host country for the appointment of a certain person as the head of the diplomatic mission.

Ronald Johnson is a retired U.S. Marine Corps Brigadier General and national security expert with decades of experience in military and international assignments, Fena writes.
