The UN Security Council further softened the Text of the Resolution on Gaza to avoid a US Veto

The UN Security Council is struggling to take a unified position on the war in Gaza, replacing a call for a “permanent cessation of hostilities” with a draft resolution demanding a “cease to hostilities”.

Council members are struggling to find common ground: although a vote on the resolution is scheduled for Tuesday, after being postponed on Monday, it could be postponed again, AFP reported, citing diplomatic sources.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has repeatedly delayed the UN Security Council’s vote on its draft resolution to try to secure its passage, and the situation remains highly volatile.

The vote is now scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, but if there are signs the US is still not on board, that could quickly change again.

UAE Ambassador to the UN Lana Nusseibeh this morning characterized the ongoing negotiations as complex, but said she hoped the council could finally “speak with one voice.”

Indeed, other diplomats say intensive talks are underway with the United States, which is taking a tough line on the precise text of the resolution, Fena writes.
