Any attack on a police officer, whether it is verbal or physical, and especially the worst case scenario – if he is fatally injured and if unpleasant scenes happen outside of his duty, in every orderly country is a direct attack on the state itself.
The policeman is, practically, the mirror of every state and as such he should evoke at least a form of awe in everyone, as was once the case in the former Yugoslavia.
And what is the situation today? Every now and then there is an attack on a police officer… Although you won’t find it in the official bulletin news of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) police agencies – cursing, insulting, belittling, spitting and threats are, unfortunately, almost everyday occurrences for police officers. Anyone who has spent a few hours with the police officers knows what we are talking about…
Worrying data
Citizens rightly wonder what they should expect when the police officers are under attack?! The numbers don’t lie and are the real indicator of the situation when it comes to this issue.
Mersiha Novalic, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Canton Sarajevo (CS), revealed the data which are, to say the least, worrisome.
“In the current year 2023, ending on December 22nd, 17 attacks on members of the CS Ministry of Internal Affairs Police Directorate were recorded, which were qualified as a criminal offense by the competent prosecutors as an attack on an official in the performance of security duties,” says Novalic.
“The most common attacks on police officers occur in the way that attackers use physical force to attack police officers.”
It should be said that this problem, unfortunately, is also present in other cities in BiH, Radio Sarajevo writes.
