In Bosnia and Herzegovina and around the world, International Labor Day is celebrated today, in memory of the great workers’ demonstrations that took place in Chicago on May 1, 1886.

At that time, more than 40 thousand workers demanded an eight-hour workday and better working conditions.

During the demonstrations, where workers’ leaders highlighted demands symbolically expressed with three eights, the police attacked the workers, and more than two hundred workers died on that occasion, and the strike leaders were sentenced to death.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, May Day as Labor Day was first celebrated in 1907, but protests and work stoppages were held as early as May 1906.

In many countries around the world, this day continues to be the main motive for numerous labor unions to express their dissatisfaction with policies that do not contribute to improving the status of workers on the streets of cities.

Today, this day is mostly associated with additional days off, but many workers in our country will still spend May Day working.

On the other hand, some will enjoy the non-working days that have been declared as the first and second of May in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Throughout the Balkans, the celebration of May Day is reserved for good food, barbecues, and socializing.
