English football giants Liverpool have confirmed the terrible news that Portuguese player and club star Diogo Jota has died in a car accident in Spain.

Liverpool have released a short and sad statement confirming the death of their first team and Portugal international. Jota died with his brother Andre Silva in a car accident in the province of Zamora.

“Liverpool are devastated by the tragic death of Diogo Jota. The club has been informed that the 28-year-old has passed away following a car accident in Spain alongside his brother Andre,” Liverpool said in a statement, adding:

“Liverpool FC will not be making any further comment at this time and would ask that Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff be respected as they come to terms with this unimaginable loss. We will continue to offer them our full support,” it concluded.

The 28-year-old winger has made over 120 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, winning numerous trophies with the club, including the Premier League. He has also played 49 times for Portugal, scoring 14 goals. He has been an integral part of the Portugal squad alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

“The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are completely devastated by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, this morning in Spain. Diogo Jota, much more than a fantastic player, who played almost 50 times for the national team, was an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, someone with contagious joy and a reference in the community itself,” the Federation said.

The Portuguese Football Federation expressed its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool and FC Penafiel, and the clubs for which the players played.

The Portuguese Football Federation has already asked UEFA to hold a minute’s silence this Thursday, before the national team’s match against Spain at the European Women’s Championship.

“We have lost two champions. The death of Diogo and André Silva is an irreparable loss for Portuguese football and we will do everything we can to pay tribute to their legacy every day,” the statement concluded.
