The United States (U.S.) will impose a 30 percent tariff on goods originating from the European Union (EU) and Mexico starting August 1st, President Donald Trump announced on Saturday.
In a post on the Truth Social network, Trump shared separate letters addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, in which he announced a 30 percent tariff on goods intended for the U.S. from Europe and Mexico.
The letter puts trade negotiations between the U.S. and the EU at risk, as the bloc aimed to finalize a comprehensive trade agreement this month.
Earlier this week, Trump announced a new wave of tariffs that will affect countries such as Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Brazil, and he also imposed a 50 percent tariff on copper imports.
