Komsic: There is no longer One inviolable Center of Political and Military Power, BiH needs the EU and NATO

BiH Presidency Member Željko Komšić stated on Tuesday evening in Ljubljana that BiH should remain on the path defined by the country’s official policy and work towards becoming a member of NATO, but in what form, when and how is a separate question, and that it should continue to maintain the ambition to one day become a member of the European Union.

At a lecture on the topic “The Western Balkans in a Changing Global Order – Perspectives of Bosnia and Herzegovina” as part of the “Western Balkans and the EU” cycle of the International Institute for Middle East and Balkan Studies (IFIMES), Komšić stated that what is happening in the world now cannot be called the destruction of all values, because it is questionable whether the values on which the international order was officially based really existed because of the great hypocrisy in all of this.

He added that the question arises whether BiH should remain where we said we were or perhaps try to adapt to the fact that there is no longer one inviolable center of political and military power.

“Maybe the statement sounds too strong, but the facts are that in the East, China is growing and becoming a serious power, India too, and some countries that were considered only regional powers are proving to be key in the processes that can shape the future world, such as Turkey, Iran, Israel and Pakistan,” said Komšić.

He believes that if BiH were to make a radical turn towards some other alliances in the now multipolar world, it would undermine not only the situation in the country but also regional stability.

Komšić expressed his desire for the countries of the region to find themselves on the same foreign policy goals so that in the future they could be in a political and economic “club” like the EU and share universal values.

He emphasized that it is evident that the power that was concentrated in one place has simply been dispersed across the entire planet.

“It is to be hoped that there will be more wisdom than there has been so far and that the need for some order and moving towards a peaceful resolution of all active and potential conflicts will prevail,” said Komšić.

He stressed that the world needs the United Nations because it is difficult to imagine a world in which such an institution does not exist.
