U.S. Embassy: RS Government borrowed 1.1 Billion BAM in a Year and a Half, where is the Money?

The United States (U.S.) Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has addressed the topic of the Republika Srpska (RS) entity’s borrowing on social media.

“In the last 18 months, the RS Government has borrowed more than 1.1 billion BAM just on the Banja Luka Stock Exchange, a significant sum that does not include commercial loans whose terms are not publicly available,” the U.S. Embassy’s post states.

They then asked the RS government a question that surely interests the citizens of RS as well.

“So, if the RS Government has ended up with a deficit and continues to struggle with meeting obligations and deadlines for social services and agricultural subsidies, the question is – where has all that money gone?” the U.S. Embassy in BiH asks.

Despite these data, the ruling structures assure the public that they are regularly servicing debts and that the financial situation is stable. However, the question remains how long the RS government will continue borrowing under a veil of secrecy, how will they repay the debts, and what they have mortgaged?
