The European football championship will begin on Friday with the duel between Germany and Scotland, which starts at 9:00 p.m. The European Football Union has published details about the prize fund that do not exactly follow the trends in the world of football.

We have been accustomed for decades that the prize fund at major competitions always increases, and the Euro in Germany does not really follow that trend.

The total prize fund amounts to 331 million euros. All national teams will receive 9.25 million euros each for their appearance at the European Championship.

A win in the group stage is worth an additional million, and a draw is worth 500,000 euros.

The national teams that are eliminated in the round of 16 will receive another 1.5 million euros each. Elimination in the quarter-finals is worth 2.5 million, and placing among the four best national teams brings four million euros.

The finalist will be awarded five million euros, and the new European champion will receive an additional eight million.

The European champion can collect a maximum of 28.25 million euros.

Compared to the last European Championship, the prize fund has been reduced. Even then, each national team received 9.25 million just for placing, but a victory in the group stage brought 1.5 million, while a draw was “charged” 750,000. Entering the round of 16 brought half a million euros more, and placing in the quarterfinals even 725,000 more than this year. At the previous Euro, semi-finalists received one million more, while placing in the semi-finals brought seven million – two million more than now. The maximum that the champion of the last Euro could get was 34 million euros – 5.75 million more than can be the case in Germany, N1 writes.
