The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has killed the head of the Russian Armed Forces’ radiation, chemical and biological protection forces, Igor Kirillov, in a special operation in Moscow, an unnamed SBU source told Reuters.
Reuters could not independently confirm the source’s claim, which said Kiev considers Kirillov a “war criminal” and an “absolutely legitimate target.”
The source added that Kiev accuses Kirillov of ordering the use of chemical weapons against Ukrainian forces.
Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said the Ukrainian leadership would face immediate revenge for the killing of Russian General Igor Kirillov, RIA Novosti reported.
“Realizing the inevitability of their military defeat, they are resorting to cowardly and vile strikes in peaceful cities,” Medvedev said.
Russia’s Investigative Committee announced earlier that Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, who was the head of Russia’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection forces, was killed outside an apartment building in Moscow, along with his assistant.
