UN Calls On The Taliban To Restore Internet And Phone Signal Access In Afghanistan

The United Nations (UN) yesterday called on the Taliban government in Afghanistan to immediately restore access to the internet and telecommunications across the country, which had been cut off for 24 hours.

“The disruption of access has almost completely isolated Afghanistan from the rest of the world and risks causing significant harm to the Afghan people, including endangering economic stability and worsening one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world,“ stated the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

Afghanistan yesterday experienced its second day without internet and mobile phone signals after Taliban authorities cut optical connections, marking the first time this has happened since 2021, when they returned to power.

International flights to Afghanistan have been canceled, according to data from the air traffic tracking website Flightradar24, and mobile phone signals began to weaken two days ago until the connection fell below one percent, the cybersecurity organization NetBlocks reported.
