UN Resolution about Srebrenica again is a Stumbling Stone in BiH Presidency

The member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željka Cvijanović, sent a letter to all heads of missions of the UN member states, as well as to the Secretary General and President of the UN General Assembly Antonio Guterres and Dennis Francis, in which she drew attention to the fact that the Ambassador of BiH to the UN, Zlatko Lagumdžija unilaterally initiated steps to submit a resolution on Srebrenica for adoption by the UN General Assembly. He claims that the letter sent to the Permanent Mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the UN was not forwarded. Cvijanović’s letter was forwarded to everyone by the ambassador of neighboring Serbia, Nemanja Stevanović.

In a letter, Željka Cvijanović warns UN officials that Zlatko Lagumdžija has violated the constitutional framework of BiH, because he is preparing the Resolution on Srebrenica without the authorization of the three-member Presidency of BiH. He warns that if the Resolution is adopted, there is a risk of igniting tensions and halting the progress made towards peace and stability in the region.

ŽELJKA CVIJANOVIĆ, member of the BiH Presidency

“I must emphasize that this resolution, if adopted, will undermine the long-term post-war healing process in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its adoption would cause internal conflicts in BiH and seriously threaten inter-ethnic reconciliation, which is of crucial importance for the future of BiH”.

Presidency member Denis Bećirović claims that the Resolution aims to strengthen the process of trust and reconciliation in BiH and the entire region. He called out the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, because he assessed the Resolution as unfair. Vučić announced that he will lobby in New York so that the Resolution does not receive support.

DENIS BEĆIROVIĆ, Chairman of the BiH Presidency

In recent weeks, he has descended to a level below civilized values when he again denies the genocide committed against Bosniaks in Srebrenica. I urge him not to do that. Let him accept the judgments of the UN courts.

This is one of the topics on which both the ruling and opposition parties in the RS have the same position. Thus, the president of SDS agrees with the letter of Željka Cvijanović. He does not think that the eventual adoption of the resolution can cause unrest in BiH, because, he says, it is non-binding.
