The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously supported the extension of the EUFOR’s Althea mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina for another year.

All 15 member countries voted in favor of extending the mandate.

In view of the political situation, the High Representative in BiH Christian Schmidt recommended in his report to the UN Security Council an increased involvement of the international community in order to ensure full compliance with the General Framework Agreement for Peace and enable key reforms.

In this regard, the report states that EUFOR-ALTHEA continues to play a vital role in maintaining peace and security in Bosnia and Herzegovina and that its presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina remains necessary.

At the session, the address of the BiH ambassador to the UN, Sven Alkalaj, is also expected.

For a long time, Russia announced that it would veto the extension of EUFOR’s mandate, but changed its decision after messages, primarily from the SNSD leader Milorad Dodik, that it was, however, in the interest of the RS for EUFOR to remain in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
