undpUnited Nations Development Programme (UNDP) marked the 50th anniversary of founding and 20 years of operation in BiH yesterday in Banja Luka.

During the last year, UNDP has invested 73 million USD in development of BiH, and special focus was given to energy efficiency – Green Economic Development.

“From the perspective of energy consumption, BiH represents a country with very high energy inefficiency, however, BiH has one of the greatest potential for energy conservation in the region and it could base its further economic development and create new work places on the basis of improvement of energy efficiency measures in private and public sector,” said Sanjin Avdic, Head of the Sector for Energy and Environment of UNDP BiH.

BiH spends about 20 % of its GDP on energy, which is three times more than in the EU and USA.

UNDP, in collaboration with its partners, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations, the Embassy of Sweden in BiH, the Fund for Environmental Protection of the FBiH and the Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency of RS, is implementing the project “Green Economic Development”, with the aim of energy saving and directing of savings to new priority projects.

“The objectives of the “Green economic development” are very clear: to create the conditions for investments in the sector of energy efficiency, increase the number of “green work places” through new activities and the development of existing ones and eventually to contribute to the development of the market which leads to an increase in economic progress,” said Avdic.

UNDP is the global development network of the UN, and it operates in around 170 countries.

They are dedicated to helping the country through strengthening of national and local capacities for implementation of political, economic and social reforms and development for two decades in BiH, and they are primarily based, through a number of active projects, on social inclusion and full elimination of poverty, with the support of their international partners in development which is a priority objective of the organization until 2030.

The celebration in Banja Luka was marked with numerous contents and performances.
