Federal Minister of Energy, Mining and Industry Vedran Lakić met today with the Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, John Ginkel. The central topic of the meeting was the acceleration of the implementation of the Southern Interconnection project, a key strategic direction for the energy security of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The meeting discussed the current status of the project “and a set of concrete measures, such as the confirmation of the Urban Planning Commission and the harmonization of the draft intergovernmental agreement between BiH and Croatia, which urgently need to be taken to remove obstacles and accelerate the implementation of this important infrastructure project.

Representatives of the US Embassy confirmed that the Southern Interconnection is a project of crucial importance for the energy sector of BiH, which the current US administration strongly supports and wants to see implemented at full capacity.

It was emphasized that options remain open that can contribute to satisfying the interests of all parties, and above all, accelerate progress on the project.

Charge d’Affaires Ginkel, referring to recent talks in Athens with US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, and US Ambassador to Croatia Nicole McGraw, commented on the high level of US commitment to this project.

On that occasion, it was emphasized that the Southern Interconnection has the full attention of the highest US officials as “one of the priorities of US foreign policy in BiH”.
