Vandal Attacks on a Religious Building and Private Homes of Bosniaks

In the area of the Majlis of the Islamic Community of Capljina, in the town of Surmanci, several vandal attacks on a masjid, as well as on private homes of Bosniaks, have been recorded in the last few days.

On this occasion, Imam Adem Effendi Suta reacted publicly on behalf of the Capljina Majlis.

He states that the masjid in Surmanci was targeted by these unknown persons, who in the first attack broke the windows, and in the next attack they would shoot the windows and doors of the masjid with an air rifle. During the attack on the masjid, significant material damage was caused.

What is frightening, points out Effendi Suta, is the fact that the perpetrators placed a dead lizard on a stand on which the body of a deceased person is placed while performing the funeral prayer in front of the mosque, as a kind of message to Bosniaks.

“Several attacks, breaking windows, and burglaries were also carried out on several private houses of Bosniaks, on that occasion significant material damage was caused. The desecration of our religious building and the attack on the private houses of our congregations’ members is an attack on our religious and national identity,” emphasized the Imam of Capljina.

Moreover, he called on the domestic and international public to unequivocally condemn the aforementioned attacks, and the competent police authorities to ensure the right to safety for Bosniaks in Surmanci.

“Members of the Capljina Police Station carried out investigations after the report,” said Effendi Suta and added that they will take the necessary measures and actions to identify the perpetrators, and will inform the public about the outcome of the investigation in a timely manner.
