mladic2The president of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Carmel Agius, met at the United Nations headquarters in New York yesterday with United Nations Secretary General Antoni Guterres.

This meeting was their first meeting since Guterres was appointed as Secretary General.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Secretary General thanked President Agius for the extraordinary success that the International Tribunal achieved, as well as on its effectiveness, by saying that it is a very important instrument not only in the pursuit of justice, but also in the deterrence of the commission of crimes.

He confirmed that the International Tribunal is working with the anticipated dynamics and that it will complete its work by the end of 2017, and that the latest verdicts in Mladic and Prlic case will be pronounced by November 30th.
