Vote of No Confidence in Ursula von der Leyen Officially Scheduled

The vote on the motion of no confidence in European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is scheduled for July 10, while the debate will take place on July 7 during the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Romanian MEP Gheorghe Piperea announced.

The motion has passed the approval stage within the Conference of Presidents (COP) and has been supported by 79 signatures.

“The motion of no confidence in Ursula von der Leyen has just passed the filter of the Conference of Presidents. 79 signatures have been collected. It will be debated on Monday, and the vote is scheduled for Thursday in Strasbourg,” Piperea wrote on the X platform.

Piperea, who tabled the motion, claims that von der Leyen is violating EU transparency standards by refusing to publish text messages she exchanged with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during negotiations on coronavirus vaccines in 2021. Although the Court of Justice of the EU ruled in favor of the journalist who sought access to the messages, the European Commission has not yet published them.

Speaking to Anadolu, Piperea accused the Commission of hypocrisy, claiming that it imposes strict rule of law standards on Eastern European countries while itself avoiding institutional scrutiny.

Although the proposal is not expected to receive majority support from MEPs, Piperea stresses that it sends a strong symbolic message, AA writes.
