“We love Jurek more than burek”, chanted the people of Sarajevo to Jure Franko after winning silver at the 1984 Winter Olympic Games held in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“At the time I didn’t even know what it meant, it was like a joke to me, a good joke, in the end it turned out that it follows me all my life,” said Franko today.
The mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karić, does not see anything objectionable in holding the famous slogan.
“We treated ourselves with burek and with a glass of conversation about Sarajevo, which she never forgets and always comes back to,” said Karić.
As a reminder, Franko is a former Yugoslav and Slovenian alpine skier, best known for winning the silver medal in the giant slalom at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo for Yugoslavia.
This was the first ever medal from the Winter Olympics for Yugoslavia. Franko also participated in World Cup competitions where he took third place three times.
