The World Food Program (WFP) has announced that it has received reports of deaths from starvation in parts of Sudan where the civil war is ongoing.

Namely, the WFP statement said that the number of people in need of food aid in that country had doubled last year and called on all parties to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.

It added that it is almost impossible for humanitarian agencies to reach those in need of food due to security threats and road closures.

The statement said that 18 million people across the country are facing the threat of severe hunger.

It was further stated that 70 trucks are stopped in Port Sudan and 31 trucks in Al-Ubeyd and cannot move due to security issues.

WFP Sudan representative Eddie Rowe said that life-saving aid is not reaching those who need it most and they are starting to receive news of deaths due to starvation.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been wracked by fighting between the army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the country’s ruling Sovereign Council, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Several ceasefire agreements brokered by Saudi and American mediators have failed to end the violence.
